Golden opportunity lost

Hwang logged one shot (zero on goal) across 45 minutes during the Korea Republic's 1-0 loss Wednesday against South Africa.

Analysis: Against both the Czech Republic and Mexico mid-June, Hwang was a used substitute for Lee Jae-Sung. Between the former's two appearances, he logged a created chance across 61 minutes. But following the Korea-Mexico game, in which Lee struggled, Korea's manager Hong Myung-bo has promoted Hwang. The tactical change was unfruitful, as his lone shot went wide and he logged several turnovers during one half. As a result, Hong decided to use both Oh Hyun-Gyu and Son Heung-Min together, different from the aforementioned games when they separately played.

His role may vary depending on the formation, but he remains one of the squad's most proven scorers alongside Son Heung-Min and Lee Kang-In.
