Will remain out versus Spain
Araujo (calf) has "no chance of playing against Spain", according to coach Marcelo Bielsa, El Espectador Deportes reports.
Analysis: Araujo was originally targeting the final group match to return after missing the first two contests due to his injury, but it seems he's still struggling with discomfort. This means two among Jose Maria Gimenez, Sebastian Caceres and Mathias Olivera will be involved in center-back roles in the upcoming game, although Uruguay have experienced trouble at the back without the Barcelona man. It's still unclear if Araujo will be back in an eventual round of 32 fixture.
Targeting return vs. Spain
Araujo (calf) remains unavailable for Sunday's second group stage clash against Cape Verde, with the target being a return for the fixture against Spain on June 26, according to Matias Laborda of the AUF executive committee, per DSPORTS Uruguay. "The objective is that De Arrascaeta and Araujo can return against Spain, it will depend on how we arrive."
Analysis: Araujo continues his individual training program as he works through his calf injury, with Uruguay taking a careful and patient approach to his reintegration rather than rushing him back before he is fully ready. The captain's return is being targeted for the group stage finale against Spain on June 26, with Jose Maria Gimenez, Sebastian Caceres and Santi Bueno expected to continue covering at center-back in his absence. The coaching staff are managing his workload carefully to ensure he is at full capacity for what promises to be one of the tournament's most high-profile group stage clashes.
