Scores goal of tournament
Lopes Cabral logged one goal on two shots (two on goal), seven crosses (two accurate) and five corners during Cape Verde's 3-2 loss Friday to Argentina.
Analysis: No longer suspended and added to Cape Verde's starting XI against reigning World Cup champion Argentina, Lopes Cabral made the most of his newfound opportunity, particularly after their game continued into extra time. During its first half, with ball possession outside Argentina's penalty box, the left-back evaded Alexis Mac Allister by going to his right. Still outside the box, Lopes Cabral finessed a shot over Nahuel Molina and past Emiliano Martinez for an unparalleled goal. It is Lopes Cabral's first for the WC tournament, during which he also logged eight corners and two chances created. Defensively, the left-back recorded 15 clearances, three interceptions and two blocks.
Suspension over
Cabral is no longer suspended and will be able to face Argentina in the round of 32 on July 3.
Analysis: Cabral had earned a one-game ban after picking up yellow cards in each of his first two World Cup matches, which ruled him out of the clash against Saudi Arabia. With his suspension now served, he is expected to regain his spot on the left side of Cape Verde's back line for the knockout stage fixture.
Set for suspension
Cabral has earned a one-game ban after receiving yellow cards in each of the first two World Cup games, becoming ineligible for the next clash against Saudi Arabia.
Analysis: Cabral has been solid on the left flank of his country's back line, so this news is an important blow that will force a change in the usual lineup. His place may be covered by Joao Paulo, who logged a few minutes as a left-back in the opening matchup versus Spain. After serving his suspension, Cabral will aim to regain his usual spot and continue to produce defensive stats if Cape Verde qualify for the playoff rounds.
Picks up yellow
Cabral recorded one cross (zero accurate) and one chance created in Monday's 0-0 draw against Spain. In addition, he was given a yellow card in the 16th minute.
Analysis: Cabral logged 76 minutes in Cape Verde's scoreless draw against Spain, contributing five clearances, two tackles and two interceptions, while also creating a chance from left-back. He had a hard time dealing with Spain's right flank attack and also picked up a yellow card for his foul on Marcos Llorente in the 16th minute. Cabral enjoyed a great season for Benfica, recording six goals and five assists from left back. He was subbed off in the 76th minute as Lamine Yamal's introduction left Cabral on thin ice his due to his yellow card.
