Out for season opener
Abdelmonem is out for Saturday's season opener against Lorient, according to coach Olivier Pantaloni, per ICI Azur. "Abdelmonem is the one who came back latest from the World Cup, and we would have liked to give him 45 minutes against Hull, but that wasn't possible. We're going to give him time."
Analysis: Abdelmonem's late return from international duty has left him behind his teammates in fitness, and the club is clearly opting to be patient with his buildup rather than rush him into action. Antoine Mendy, Xavier Mandza and Youssouf Ndayishimiye are expected to make up the back three in his absence. Abdelmonem is expected to continue working toward full sharpness with a return targeted in the coming weeks.
Ruled out against Argentina
Abdelmonem (ankle) is unavailable for Tuesday's World Cup Round of 16 clash against Argentina.
Analysis: Abdelmonem returned to team training ahead of the match and had appeared to be on track for a potential return, but he ultimately was not deemed fit enough to feature. The center-back will miss a second consecutive match after suffering a heavy ankle bruise against Iran earlier in the tournament. His absence limits Egypt's defensive depth for one of its biggest matches of the competition, though he was not expected to be a guaranteed starter. Abdelmonem's next opportunity to return will depend on both his recovery and Egypt's progression in the tournament.
