Set to return against Tottenham
Gomes is set to return to Aston Villa's squad for Saturday's match against Tottenham after recovering from a calf injury and completing his three-match suspension, according to coach Unai Emery. "But we will see - they are more or less with the group but I must be sure they are 100% for tomorrow."
Analysis: Gomes is expected to return to the squad after missing Wednesday's Carabao Cup tie with calf discomfort, with his suspension also having kept him out of Villa's previous three Premier League matches. Manager Unai Emery will still make final checks on his fitness before kickoff, but the midfielder appears on course to be available for his first league appearance since being sent off against Brighton on the opening day. His return gives Emery another option in central midfield, with Boubacar Kamara and Ross Barkley also competing for minutes.
Sent off in Villa debut
Gomes was shown a red card for violent conduct in the 39th minute of Sunday's match against Brighton.
Analysis: Gomes's dismissal came in his first official match under his new colors, hardly the debut he would have dreamed of. He'll miss at least one match as a result, meaning he's set to sit out Villa's next fixture against Arsenal on August 31 at minimum. Ross Barkley is expected to drop back into his role in his absence, with Lamare Bogarde also an option to fill in at that spot.
