Struggles in romp versus Belgium

Surman generated one tackle (zero won), three blocks and two clearances and committed one foul in Friday's 5-1 loss against Belgium.

Analysis: Surman floundered for most of the fixture, and especially in the second half, as the New Zealand backline offered little resistance to Belgium's waves of offense, leading to a large defeat and resulting in an early World Cup elimination. He has tallied exactly three blocks and one tackle (two total won) and multiple clearances, amassing 14, in all three contests, scoring one goal, but with no clean sheets.

Opens scoring Sunday

Surman scored one goal to go with one shot (one on goal) in Sunday's 3-1 defeat to Egypt.

Analysis: Surman opened up the scoring Sunday with a header in the 15th minute assisted by Tim Payne's cross. Surman found himself unmarked in the box, giving him an easy opportunity to score his third career international goal and his first at the World Cup. Despite the strong start and first half from the Kiwis, Surman and the defense struggled mightily in the second half. Egypt scored thrice in the second half to complete the comeback and then some, exposing the New Zealand defense that has now allowed five goals through two matches at this World Cup. Next up is the final group stage match versus Belgium on Friday, a must-win match for both sides.
