Brilliant against Colombia

Kobel made three saves and allowed zero goals in Tuesday's 0-0 (4-3) penalty shootout win against Colombia.

Analysis: Kobel denied the opposition some big opportunities throughout the game, and he also stopped Cucho Hernandez's shootout penalty kick, leading Switzerland to a historic quarter-finals qualification. The goalkeeper has been solid across five appearances at the international competition, allowing only three goals and keeping his goal unbeaten in each of the two knockout contests so far. Up next he'll face Argentina's powerful offense, which has scored three goals in three straight games.

Two saves against Algeria

Kobel recorded two saves and allowed zero goals in Thursday's 2-0 win versus Algeria.

Analysis: Kobel made two saves in Thursday's 2-0 win over Algeria, denying Ibrahim Maza's snap shot that dragged narrowly wide in first-half stoppage time and getting down comfortably when Riyad Mahrez fired straight at him in the second half after the Algerian captain's only real chance of the match was blocked by Manuel Akanji. The Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper commanded his area throughout and was largely untroubled by an Algeria attack that managed very few clear-cut opportunities against Switzerland's organized defensive block. His two saves and clean sheet heading into the round of 16 against Colombia or Ghana continue a consistent group stage campaign in which Switzerland ended 88 years of World Cup knockout pain with a controlled and clinical performance in Vancouver.
