Sidelined for Brighton clash
Abraham (undisclosed) has been ruled out for Sunday's clash against Brighton due to injury, according to coach Unai Emery, per John Townley. "Abraham has an injury too."
Analysis: Abraham has been unable to recover in time for the Premier League opener after being forced off during the final preseason friendly against Borussia Monchengladbach. No details have been provided on the nature or severity of the issue, and his absence compounds an already difficult situation for Aston Villa up front with Ollie Watkins also unavailable and Brian Madjo expected to miss the opening weeks of the season. Emiliano Buendia is set to start at the point of the attack in his place, with the coaching staff forced to find a creative solution to their striker shortage for the opener against Brighton.
Begins indoor testing work
Abraham (shoulder) took part in indoor gym work and testing as Aston Villa began preseason on Monday, the club posted.
Analysis: Abraham underwent surgery for a persistent shoulder injury last week, and this indoor session marks his first activity with the squad as preseason gets underway. The forward made 16 appearances and scored three goals after joining from Besiktas in January, including a late equalizer against Leeds United and a dramatic 93rd minute winner against Sunderland, before the shoulder issue ended his season early. He is expected to be eased back gradually as Villa monitor his recovery through the early stages of preseason. A timeline for his return to full training is expected to become clearer in the coming weeks.
