Will face increased competition
Alexander-Arnold will face an even bigger fight to hold onto his starting spot at Real Madrid next season after the club agreed a deal to sign Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Analysis: Alexander-Arnold endured a difficult debut campaign at the Santiago Bernabeu, managing no goals from 14 shots and four assists from 40 chances created across 30 appearances in all competitions, and was left out of England's World Cup squad entirely by manager Thomas Tuchel, missing out on the tournament altogether. Dani Carvajal's departure at the end of the season had appeared to open the door for Alexander-Arnold to become Real's undisputed right back, but the club's move for Denzel Dumfries now sets up a fresh battle for the starting role. With Dumfries unlikely to arrive as a backup, Alexander-Arnold will need to rediscover his best form quickly to avoid starting next season on the sidelines both for club and country.
Sits out finale through illness
Alexander-Arnold is unavailable for Saturday's season finale against Athletic due to illness.
Analysis: Alexander-Arnold failed to recover from a flu that caused him to miss the latest training session, ruling him out of the squad entirely. The right back was not expected to start regardless, with Dani Carvajal set to be handed a farewell appearance in his final game for the Merengues. Alexander-Arnold closes the curtain on a below-par first season, registering no goals from 14 shots but chipping in with four assists from 40 chances created across 30 appearances, starting 22 of those.
