Exits with hamstring issue
Ballard was forced off in the 95th minute of Northern Ireland's win over Georgia on Friday with a possible hamstring injury.
Analysis: Ballard's potential hamstring issue will be worth monitoring after he played every Premier League minute at center-back for Sunderland through the opening five matches. He has recorded 10 tackles, four interceptions and 31 clearances over that span, establishing himself as a key part of the defense. Omar Alderete could be in line for increased playing time if Ballard is forced to miss any matches.
Busy defensively
Ballard generated two tackles (one won) and six clearances in Saturday's 2-1 defeat against Ipswich Town. In addition, he was given a yellow card in the 36th minute.
Analysis: Ballard and co started the season off with a disappointing defeat, but the defender had his work to do defensively and did it well. He made six clearances and a pair of tackles, though he was shown a yellow card in the second half. There will be plenty of chances for Ballard to stay involved defensively this season as Sunderland look to repeat an excellent campaign back in the top flight.
