🏟️ What was it like to actually be at the 1966 World Cup Final?
✍️ Reader Paul Daniel wrote in to tell us, and shared some pictures of his memorabilia from that magical summer
🗣️ "I was 17 in 1966. My dad and I bought two books of tickets that covered all England's games
🚇 "We lived in St Albans so drove to Stanmore and rode two stops on the Tube to Wembley Park for the games. There was one at White City Stadium, too
8️⃣ "I missed the Argentina quarter-final because of a wedding in Liverpool – but managed to get two tickets for Portugal 5 North Korea 3. Incredibly, those eight goals were one more than we saw in the six group games we attended
😴 "England's group games were pretty turgid: three goalless draws and not much excitement. What a difference at Goodison Park!
🏃🏃♂️ "I went to that game with my cousin. We dashed out of the reception and got there for the warm-up. We were staggered by how the Korean keeper threw himself around, fingertipping shots over the crossbar. Great fun!
🇰🇵 "The Koreans were brilliant in the first half – 3-2 up, so it could have been England v North Korea in the semis. Eusebio had other ideas with a four-goal masterclass
⭐️ "He was the obvious semi-final threat, but we had Bobby Charlton, he was world-class that night
🏴 "The Final was a real occasion. There was a very nationalistic atmosphere around the ground. Whenever the Germans started their 'Uwe, Uwe' chants for striker Uwe Seeler, the England roar immediately drowned it out.
🔋 "My main memory from the match was Alan Ball's performance; his energy levels were incredible. He was first to reach Geoff Hurst after the breakaway hat-trick goal.
🦷 "After that it was the sight of Nobby Stiles, socks around his ankles, no front teeth, waving the World Cup at us behind the goal!
☕️ "After-match celebrations? No, me and my dad went home for tea!
✂ "I’ve kept cuttings and diligently filled in the programme, which covered every game in the competition. Quite an effort - you had to find the names of linesmen, too!
🎟️ "I haven't totted up how much the ticket book cost, but as you can see, it was a guinea for the final...£1.05!"
