In contention for season opener

Cornelius (ankle) was present at Marseille's training session Wednesday and is in contention for Friday's season opener against Strasbourg, the club announced.

Analysis: Cornelius had missed the friendly against Atletico Madrid due to an ankle injury but was already back training days later, a positive sign that the issue was not especially serious. His continued involvement in training this week strengthens his chances of featuring in the opener. Cornelius is expected to be assessed further before a final decision is made on his role against Strasbourg. His availability would give Marseille another option at the back as they finalize their lineup for the start of the season.

Clean sheet Sunday

Cornelius recorded one shot (one on goal) and one chance created in Sunday's 1-0 victory against South Africa.

Analysis: Cornelius would help Canada to a very important win Sunday, with the defender recording three clearances as they earned a clean sheet. This is his first clean sheet of the tournament, as he was taken off the field at halftime when defeating Qatar 6-0. He has now played the full 90 in all but that match, likely to continue starting in the round of 16.

Two shots from defense

Cornelius had two shots (zero on goal) in Wednesday's 2-1 loss against Switzerland.

Analysis: Cornelius took a pair of speculative shots from the defense during Wednesday's loss. The defender couldn't slow down the Swiss attack but did ok to create space for himself going in the attack. He will have some tough matches in the knockout stage if Canada are going to go on any sort of run.

Subbed at halftime after yellow

Cornelius recorded one shot (zero on goal) in Thursday's 6-0 victory over Qatar. In addition, he was given a yellow card in the 9th minute.

Analysis: Cornelius started the match at centre back and was substituted once the game was secured at halftime, as he had been yellow-carded early in the game. He played the full 90 minutes in the opener, winning two of his four tackles, but in this game, he only made one clearance and conceded two fouls.

Links up with Canada

Cornelius is set for a starting role as he joins Canada for the 2026 World Cup.

Analysis: Cornelius is entering the 2026 World Cup, appearing to be a starter for Canada, set to serve alongside Moise Bombito (leg) in the middle of the defense. However, this appears to be an open debate, as Bombito is still working on a return from a broken leg, and Cornelius could have competition for his spot, with Joel Waterman as a potential replacement. That said, Cornelius is also coming off an injury-filled season, as he hasn't seen the field since March 31 in a friendly, not featuring for his league side since Nov. 9, 2025, playing in 14 games during the 2025/26 league season. He will then need to show his worth and that he can play at a top level, as Canada's defense needs to step up if they want any chance of a run in the tournament.
