Not called up, eyeing Atletico return
Alfon (quadriceps) is not in Sevilla's squad for Saturday's match against Athletic Bilbao, according to coach Luis Plaza. "He's not called up. He trained little yesterday and completed part of today's session. Next week he'll do the full week. First it's a joy because he's one more with us; any news like that is a delight. We'll be able to count on him at least to be in the squad against Atletico Madrid. It's not easy being out for a whole preseason. He's had a hard time, but he's fine now."
Analysis: Alfon suffered a fibrillar tear in his right quadriceps back in preseason, an injury that was expected to sideline him for around eight weeks, and this update shows him finally closing in on full training after a difficult stretch on the sidelines. His steady increase in training load points toward a return to the matchday squad as soon as the visit of Atletico Madrid, marking a positive step in a recovery that had stretched across the entire preseason.
Out seven to eight weeks
Alfon suffered a fibrillar tear in his right quadriceps, detected during preseason medical exams over the weekend, and will be out for around eight weeks, according to Pablo Sanchez of Diario de Sevilla.
Analysis: Alfon arrived on a free transfer from Celta Vigo last summer before spending the second half of last season on loan at Villarreal, where he also dealt with an injury that limited his playing time. The setback reportedly stems from him pushing to reach full fitness ahead of preseason, which ended up catching up with him and further weakens Sevilla's attacking options to start the new season. With his return unlikely before matchday three or four, Sevilla will need to lean on alternative attacking options at the start of the campaign.
Back with Sevilla
Alfon has returned to Sevilla following his loan with Villarreal.
Analysis: Alfon is coming off a half-season on loan with Villarreal, mainly serving in a depth role as he starte din three of his 10 appearances. The forward would record a single goal in his time with the team, nearly matching his first half of the season with Sevilla, where he earned one goal in 10 appearances (four starts). That said, the 27-year-old looks to be more of a depth option at this level of football, potentially remaining with Sevilla in that role or eyeing a move out on another loan.
