Weiser has signed a contract extension with Werder Bremen after his previous deal was set to expire on June 30, the club announced.
Analysis: Weiser made no appearances during the 2025/26 season after suffering an ACL injury in preseason, but the club expressed continued confidence in his quality heading into the new campaign. Weiser has made 123 competitive appearances for Bremen since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in 2021, contributing 14 goals and 29 assists, and head coach Daniel Thioune described him as almost like a new signing given his extended absence, expressing hope he returns fully fit. Weiser himself expressed excitement about beginning his recovery journey anew with preseason training and getting back in front of the club's supporters after missing the entire campaign.
Might not play again this season
Weiser (knee) might not play again this season, according to manager Daniel Thioune. "Nothing new has happened, and he doesn't have any major knee problems. His body is reacting to the strain, and it doesn't make sense for him to participate in training," Thioune explained. "We hope Mitchell will return soon, and we're not ruling anything out, but I don't think he'll be back on the pitch for a competitive match this season."
Analysis: Weiser was targeting being available for any of the final two matches of the season, but Thioune's recent update suggests that might not be the case, as the midfielder isn't even training. Weiser has yet to play this season, and it seems he simply won't have enough time to be on the pitch before the end of the campaign.
